Debian GNU/Linux

Debian GNU/Linux includes PGP 5 as an installable package, in the non-US section. If you are running the current stable version of Debian (version 2.2 as of this writing), then you can download pgp5i for Debian 2.2. If you are using the unstable version of Debian, then you can download pgp5i for Debian unstable.

If you wish, you can use apt-get to install the pgp5i package, replacing "gnupg" with "pgp5i" in the instructions below, instead of downloading the packages from the web site manually. Please note that this is entirely optional; you do not have to use apt-get if you don't want to.

After downloading the appropriate package, you should have a file named pgp5i_5.0-4_i386.deb. (The version number may be different, but it should begin with "pgp5i_" and end with ".deb".) You can install this with the command:

  dpkg -i pgp5i_5.0-4_i386.deb
Substitute the actual filename if the version number has changed.

If you are running an older version of Debian GNU/Linux, or if for some reason you do not wish to use a pre-compiled binary version of PGP, you can follow the instructions below to build PGP from source code.
